  • Wellbeing

At Beaminster St Mary’s, the wellbeing of our whole school community is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to supporting the emotional health, mental wellbeing and physical wellness of our pupils, staff and families. We recognise that everyone experiences challenges in life and that, at times, anyone may need additional emotional support. We know that children who feel safe, valued and supported are better able to learn, flourish and achieve their full potential.

We believe that positive wellbeing enhances motivation, strengthens relationships, promotes resilience and supports academic success. Our aim is to create a nurturing, inclusive and supportive environment where every member of the school community feels a strong sense of belonging and is empowered to thrive emotionally, mentally and physically.

Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Trust and Kindness underpin everything we do and are central to our approach to wellbeing. We encourage all members of our school community to live out these values through their relationships, behaviour and attitudes towards themselves and others.

At Beaminster St Mary’s we aim to ensure that:

      • All children feel valued, respected and included
      • Children have a strong sense of belonging and feel safe within our school community
      • Children are empowered to recognise, understand and manage their emotions and feelings
      • Children feel comfortable sharing concerns or worries with trusted adults
      • We promote self-esteem and ensure every child knows that they matter and are listened to
      • We actively encourage confidence, kindness, empathy and mutual respect
      • Children are supported to develop emotional resilience and positive coping strategies when facing challenges or       setbacks
      • Children are helped socially to form and maintain healthy relationships
      • Staff, pupils and families feel supported and emotionally connected within the school community

Using our whole-school wellbeing approach, we aim to:

Create a sense of belonging that promotes positive mental health and wellbeing by:

      • Embedding our core values of Respect, Responsibility, Trust and Kindness into everyday school life
      • Establishing clear routines, expectations and positive behaviour approaches that help children feel secure and          supported
      • Promoting kindness, empathy, inclusion and shared responsibility for caring for one another
      • Encouraging regular physical activity through PE lessons, outdoor learning and active playtimes
      • Celebrating the achievements, efforts and contributions of pupils and staff
      • Providing a calm, nurturing environment where emotional wellbeing is prioritised

Equip children and staff with the tools they need to make healthy choices and manage challenges by:

      • Teaching children about mental health, emotional literacy, resilience, self-care and healthy relationships                     through a carefully planned curriculum
      • Using the Zones of Regulation approach to help children identify, understand and manage their emotions
      • Supporting children to recognise their feelings, understand triggers and develop effective coping strategies
      • Promoting creativity, social connection and confidence through enrichment opportunities and wider school                experiences
      • Providing training and support for staff to identify and respond to emotional wellbeing and mental health needs
      • Working collaboratively with families and external agencies to provide additional support where needed

Empower everyone to take ownership of their wellbeing by:

      • Providing personalised pastoral support for pupils who may need additional emotional or social support
      • Ensuring children always have access to trusted adults who will listen and help
      • Offering dedicated pastoral support through Mrs Street, our Pastoral Teaching Assistant
      • Offering opportunities for parents and carers to access guidance, support and wellbeing resources
      • Listening to feedback from pupils, staff and families to continually develop and improve our wellbeing provision
      • Encouraging open conversations about emotions, mental health and wellbeing across the school community

Zones of Regulation is used throughout the school to support children in understanding their emotions and developing strategies to regulate them. Using a shared language of colours and emotions helps children become more aware of how they are feeling, recognise how their behaviour affects others and learn positive ways to respond to challenges. This approach supports children in developing emotional resilience, self-awareness and problem-solving skills.

Our approach to behaviour and relationships places wellbeing, positivity and respect at the centre of all interactions. Through our curriculum and daily school life, we aim to give children the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to care for their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others.

We recognise the importance of enabling children to become resilient, confident and emotionally healthy individuals who are ready to face the opportunities and challenges of life.

If you have any concerns about your child’s wellbeing, please speak to a member of staff — we are here to help and support you.
