    Music

At Beaminster St Mary's, we want our children to understand that music is a universal language that brings people together across cultures, generations and communities. Music enables children to express themselves creatively, develop confidence, communicate emotions and ideas, and experience the joy of shared performance. We want our children to recognise that music is a significant part of everyday life and plays an important role in celebrating identity, culture, history and community. Through engaging musical experiences, we aim to inspire children to become confident performers, thoughtful listeners and enthusiastic musicians who develop a lifelong appreciation of music.

Music is at the heart of school life at Beaminster St Mary's. Through classroom learning, collective worship, performances, festivals and community events, children are given regular opportunities to sing, play, create and perform. We believe that every child should have access to high-quality musical experiences that nurture creativity, collaboration, resilience and self-expression, regardless of prior experience or ability.

Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum for Music in KS1 and KS2 and builds upon the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. We use the Charanga Music Scheme alongside weekly Singing Worship to deliver a broad, balanced and progressive music curriculum. The scheme is supported through the use of tuned and untuned percussion instruments and provides opportunities for children to listen, appraise, perform, improvise and compose across a wide range of musical styles and traditions.
