Beaminster St Mary’s Academy
Art and Design Intent Statement
Beaminster St Mary’s believes that art is a vital part of children’s education, with a significant and valuable role in the taught curriculum and the enrichment opportunities we offer our pupils. We believe that art provides a forum to develop the mind-set of experiment and risk taking in learning. Our art curriculum will develop children’s critical abilities, as well as an understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages through the study of a diverse range of artists.
Children will develop their appreciation and understanding of the visual language of art through effective teaching and considered sequences of lessons and experiences. Understanding of the visual elements of art and design (line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape, 3D form) will be developed by providing a curriculum that will encourage children to explore and experiment with different techniques, styles and medium in order to inspire a love of art and to nurture and develop their artistic skills.
Beaminster St Mary’s 8 principles for an enriched and connected curriculum:
In your element - You excel, you thrive, you have fun, and you succeed. Find your element, trust yourself, give it a try, you will love it! You are all artists with your own unique style, there’s no need to compare yourself to others you all have our own special artistic voice. You are all artists, you just need to let your imagination fly!
In your hands – You are responsible for your learning. You can discover new ways to express your ideas by exploring new techniques and materials and by opening your mind to your own expressiveness. Your art work is inspiring and amazing!
In your mind – There are no right or wrong ways to express yourself in art. Believe in yourself, try new techniques, experiment, then your will grow in skill, confidence and pride. You are your artwork and your artwork is you, unique, powerful and wonderful.
In your imagination - You can create a whole new amazing world of colour and texture. You can represent your ideas in any way that you choose and interpret objects as you and you alone see them. There is no limit to your imagination. Remember, there are no right or wrong answers in art just your answers!
In your heart - Understanding how different people see the world through art can create an emotional connection to others and their lives. Art can help you to express your emotions, your dreams and your happiness without having to find the right words.
